James Sullivan, MD

Family Medicine

Dr. James L. Sullivan is a board-certified Family Medicine Physician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Raised on a family farm in central Illinois, he first earned a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the University of Illinois. He served as a Navy F-14 Tomcat pilot, completing three aircraft carrier deployments.

Caring for his older brother through a terminal illness inspired him to dedicate his life to healing, shifting his focus from military aviation to medicine. He earned his MD from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed his residency through the combined U.S. Air Force/University of Nebraska Medical Center program. Dr. Sullivan is licensed in Nebraska and Iowa and managed a practice in Fremont, Nebraska, for 14 years.

Dr. Sullivan’s philosophy is simple: prevention over reaction. He operates on the idea that it is easier to prevent health issues than to fix them later. He focuses on building collaborative, long-term relationships, empowering patients to invest in and manage their own health.

He prioritizes truly hearing his patients, viewing his role as a steady guide who supports patients as they navigate the healthcare system with clarity and confidence.

Dr. Sullivan joined Think Whole Person Healthcare because its patient-centered, comprehensive model perfectly reflects his vision for primary care. The integration of services under one roof—the Circle of Care—and the emphasis on prevention allow him to practice proactive, relationship-driven medicine. This structure supports him in overseeing and developing clear health strategies for his patients.

Patients consistently commend Dr. Sullivan as an attentive listener who makes them feel heard and respected. They appreciate his calm approach and the way he partners with them on their care. Outside of the exam room Dr Sullivan stays active with skiing, scuba diving, running, biking, and swimming. Iceland, New Zealand, and the Great Barrier Reef remain on his list of adventure concepts.
